Beverly T. Haaf
I wrote my first story in second grade. It was about a cat family, done with crayon illustration on construction paper that could fold over like a book.
My mother was my writing inspiration. We would listen to radio mysteries and when an advertisement came on, she would say: “What do you think will happen next?” All interesting writing, fiction or non-fiction, makes the readers keep reading because they want to know, “What happens next?” My mother and I would form our opinions and talk about them. We would then listen to see what really happened. (Sometimes we liked our solutions better.)
The first story I sold was written as a high school English assignment. It was a horror story, constructed to have a surprise ending. My teacher called me in to speak with her alone. She mistook my story as a cry for help from a victim of horrible parents. My fiction was disturbing in a way I’d never imagined. But it was my very first sale.
I’ve written and sold newspaper articles, magazine articles and fiction; some were horror others were not, but fiction has always been my first love. I also have had six published novels: four romances, one romantic-suspense, and one horror (haunted house).
My Beverly Bee publication of local news and activities has been in operation since 1999, and I’m an editor and layout person for a book publishing company, Jersey Pines Ink LLC.

Writing under the name Diane Arrelle, I have had over 350 short stories published as well as three books including my dark collection of horror stories, Seasons on The Dark Side and this new improved version of Just A Drop In The Cup.
I live on the edge of the Pine Barrens (home of the Jersey Devil) in Southern New Jersey with my sane husband, and my insane cat. I am proud to be one of the founding members and the second president of the Garden State Horror Writers and I am also the past president of the Philadelphia Writers’ Conference as well as currently on the PWC board of directors.
I began writing stories in college while taking the four-hour once-a-week class, The Geography of Southeast Asia, which I needed for my teaching certification in social studies. It was a really long class that begged to let my imagination roam. Growing up extremely rural, I naturally turned to writing speculative stories of aliens, UFO’s, unicorns, fairies and of course all sorts of monsters.
To support my writing habit over the decades, I have held a wide variety of jobs including Teacher, School Bus Driver, Waitress, Salesclerk, Mystery Shopper, Holiday Gift Wrapper, Newspaper Correspondent, Tutor, Freelance Writer, Author, Columnist, Senior Citizen Center Director and I was also that person who stood around in a mall burning vanilla tinged milk and cooking tasteless crepes to sell nonstick pots and pans.
Since I have retired from all those jobs except I’m always an Author, I can now add Copy-Editor, Anthology Editor and Publisher to the list.

John Haaf is the President of our Foundation and has lived in Beverly City for almost 60 years. The son of a minister and a teacher who played four musical instruments, John has been involved in the arts since he was young- taking part in activities such as the church choir, small plays, and Bible recitations. Once attending high school, John found a home in the woodshop and the school choir, helping to build sets for the school plays and singing in the chorus. John later on became the Industrial Arts teacher and Principal of Burlington Township High School, a job which requires creative thinking. Over the years, John has made antique toys, rehabbed houses, and collected a number of musical instruments along the way. Learn more about our President in the article on him in the Waterfront.
