Workshop description – “The Poet’s Toolbox” will briefly cover how poetry is distinguished from prose, poetic genres, speakers, situations and settings. We will consider the tools available to the poet through the lens of some well-known poems. These tools include word-choice, imagery and figures of speech, aural devices and
received forms such as the sonnet. We will conclude with an overview of publishing opportunities for the beginning poet.
Bio: Anna M. Evans poems have appeared in the Harvard Review, Atlanta Review, Rattle, American Arts Quarterly, and 32 Poems. She is the Board President of the
Poetry by the Sea Conference and the editor of the online poetry journal for women formalists, Mezzo Cammin.
Workshop description: “What Are You Trying to Prove”
We will discuss the difference between creative non-fiction, newspaper articles, memoir, blog posts, interviews, and “how-tos.” All pieces of writing make a point. In the case of creative non-fiction, writers need to
prove that point. Non-fiction writers need to be sure their readers understand what they mean. No guess work. They are in charge of their piece of writing or essay. Word Choice, Word Order, and Word Placement Matter. Be specific.
Bio: Victoria Marie Lees publishes non-fiction in national magazines. She is published in Chicken Soup for the Soul and as editor of her community college’s newspaper
transformed it into an award-winning paper, with a personal award for news writing.
Workshop Description: “WRITING FICTION TO PUBLISH” will cover what fiction is, what is genre and what is literary fiction, how to understand the markets to submit fiction to them and what editors expect.
Bio: Trish Rodriguez has served as the Managing Editor of Rathalla Review, a prose editor at Typehouse, and a fiction editor and fiction contest coordinator at Philadelphia Stories. Currently, she is the Editorial Director of Philadelphia Stories. She teaches
fiction writing at Rosemont College.
Workshop Description: “What Editors Expect From Authors” will cover writing etiquette, market expectations, reading and following guidelines, finding where to look for markets, formatting your writing in a professional manner and formatting your work as requested by the editors and publishers.
Bio: Beverly T. Haaf is the author of seven novels, plus short fantasy and horror fiction that’s appeared in various anthologies. She does book layout for the publishing house, Jersey Pines Ink, LLC. of which she is a co-owner. for 25 years this June, and She’s been the editor and publisher of the Beverly Bee, a monthly newspaper for four municipalities, named for the little city of Beverly NJ where she lives in an old Victorian
house that is not haunted — as far as she knows.
Bio: Dina Leacock, writing under the name Diane Arrelle, has sold more than 400 short fiction stories and is a current board member as well as a past president of the Philadelphia Writers’ Conference. She is currently on the board of The Haaf Family Art’s Foundation, Inc.. She
was a freelance writer for local newspapers as well as national magazines and wrote a humorous human-interest column for nine years. She is co-owner and anthology editor of Jersey Pines Ink, LLC.
